    Music, Memories and the Brain

    Friday, February 19, 2010 8:00am

    Location: Glaser Center

    Presented by Dr. Petr Janata
    Associate Professor of Psychology
    University of California, Davis
The autobiographical memories evoked by music, and the associated emotions, are among the most powerful and poignant ways in which music engages the human brain. Using brief musical excerpts, Dr. Janata will discuss how we respond to memory-evoking music, both in terms of the memory content and the particular areas of the brain that are engaged in following the music's melodic and harmonic structure. While many areas of the brain support memories evoked by music, Dr. Janata will explain how a single area of the brain plays a particularly prominent role in associating music, memories, and emotions.
